HOLD FOR KENDALL Antique Japanese platter hand painted with orange koi fish design, ornate border glazed deep blue with layers of gold detail. Imari 19th century pottery rectangular dish, likely Meiji, or late Edo old Kyoto porcelain.
Approximate size:
11” x 8 ½” x 1 3/8” tall
Interior: 8 ¼” x 5 ¾” x 1” deep
Marked:
4 Chinese characters in red (see photo above).
The translation of the first 3 characters are unknown, but match similar imari pieces of the late 1800s.
The last character is “Sei” or “Seisu” meaning made.
Condition:
Good, vintage, condition, with some wear and flaws. There is a large repair on one corner, where is looks like it was cracked throughout the rim completely and re-attached. Beneath the repair, on the underside rim, there is an area that either appears to have been painted on the surface, or perhaps the entire underside was painted, and it mostly flaked away. This is very unusual and unclear. There is some surface discoloration to the flat area of the paint, some pitted areas on the surface of the glaze, a likely flaw of production. There is wear the gold edges throughout. There are no other chips or cracks. The entire platter sits unevenly, also a production flaw. The damage, repair and current condition have been taken into great consideration when pricing this rare and interesting piece.
