Azo was a brand name for blue light sensitive, silver chloride photo paper introduced by the Photo Materials Company in Rochester, New York in 1898. Kodak purchased the company that same year. This paper had poor light sensitivity and was manufactured for contact printing only, not enlarging. With a broad tonal scale makes, it was the finest paper ever made to produce black and white photographs and became the choice of those producing real photo postcards (such as the above.) It was in production until 2005.

This real photo post card is an example of a chloride prints in which silver chloride papers in a gelatin emulsion were used, because the process was much faster than using traditional papers that required sunlight exposure. They became known as gaslight papers because of their ability to be exposed indoors under gaslight. They produced a good tonal range with high detail. They were often toned a warm brown (such as this one appears to be) to avoid their natural red to purplish brown color.

Approximate size:
5.5" x 3.5"
14 cm x 8.9 cm

Very good. There is slight wear on all corners. There is what looks like a faint ink mark below the studio name embossment and a few other imperfections near the boys heads (may have been part of the development process). The contrast of the photograph is slightly lesser than is appears in the photos above.
