Vintage donkey with shephard. Handmade folk art, likely South American. An alpaca or llama rides a burro. Fiber art, possibly made in Peru. A figurine with a basket of potatoes , rides a burro. It has a traditional Inca style.
The donkey figure is wired and posable, the torso is stuffed and the entire animal is wrapped in a black wool yarn to create its hide. It has shiny red cord harness and a small jungly brass bell at his neck. He has 2 styrofoam eyes that have been pinned into his head and a burlap snout with a sewn red thread mouth.
He has a natural colored mane that seems to be made of a wool or mohair. He also interestingly has one pale blue styrofoam "ball" (similar to the produce in the baskets) pinned to the backside of his snout (what this is meant to represent is not clear) and two pink styrofoam "balls" under his tail (you can be the judge of that!). The figure sitting sideways atop the burro is wearing burlap garb, a black wool top fabricated in the same manner as the burro's hide, with bell shaped burlap sleeves and a burlap "skirt " and burlap pants. He has a red hat and may be a sheep herder, for he is holder a wired green and black cane- like item with a curved top. He is wearing black wool shoes with red thread tassels. The donkey is carrying a fabric covered basket on each of its sides, each filled with styrofoam produce, likely potatoes, of a pink and pale blue hue.
Length: 8" ( 20.3 cm) approximately
Height: 6" ( 15.2 cm) approximately
Extremely good. There are no discernable flaws other than that some of styrofoam "potatoes" are nicked and/or the color is slightly worn and the burlap of the man's clothing and the donkeys snout may be yellowed. Considering the delicate handmade nature of this figure, it has kept up through the years quite well.
